Presumably, the thickness difference is all about the longer faster lens on the G7XII, whereas the (smaller) differences in width and height are caused by the articulated screen on the G7XII. For me, those two differences (faster longer lens, and articulated screen) are well worth the relatively small increase in overall size.

The screen also adds a couple of mm's of thickness.

See the Rx100 mk1 vs mk2. 2.4mm difference in thickness for just the tilty screen(They have the same lens)

Obviously the lens makes up for the rest of the thickness difference. And the majority of the weight difference.

Still these 2 products are pretty amazing offerings from Canon. Sure no 4k but those that do come with serious compromises when recording 4k.

(short record times for the Rx100 mk4/5 and significant crop with the Panasonics)

And can't deny that they both offer something unique. 100mm equiv. at F2.8 for the G7X

Smallest dimensions for the G9X.

As the length of a thread approaches 150, the probability that someone will make the obvious "it's not the camera, it's the photographer" remark approaches 1.
