Fast lenses are mainly used for subject separation or action shooting.

But a slow lens often requires a higher ISO and tends to add noise & have poor subject isolation as well.

Fully open, the traditional designs are usually sharp in the center, but the corners are soft, which doesnt matter for portraits or general purpose shooting, as they will be out of focus anyway, which is the reason for the 3D effect

I'm not sure about this.  Modern macro lenses or 'Art' lenses on high rez cameras are giving us an excellent 3D 'look' these days.  I think the thin focal plane and high rate of 'fall off' plus rounded aperture blades have a lot to do with it.
