I've been excited about the gh5 since I heard the rumors that it would be coming out. The 4k 60p and 10 bit 422 are exciting features.
That being said, I am perfectly happy sticking with my nx1 for now. I just don't see enough of a difference to dump 3k or more (including a decent lens) for almost the same feature set.
Sell the NX1...you have money enough to overcome the difference.
If I sell everything I am getting GH5+ a lens, but I have to sell all my lenses and 3 cameras for that.
Almost the same featureset?
- How is the IBIS on the NX1. Not there. It is very nice for video. A serious difference.
There is an excellent DIS and together with the lenses IS you have dual IS, with the 16-50 S it is really incredible, not as good as Pana, but it is there (unlike Fuji and a6300 and under)
I know that. Buy it falls short. Canon has it too. It is not moving a sensor around....
- 400 MBps?
It is Mega bits per second, not Mega Bytes per second.
I know...held the lock one letter too long.
This are going to be true in September of 2017, so, not there yet, not even close. We have perfectly fine 160Mbps H265, others go to 180 and even 200(?)Mbps, so really 320-400Mbps in H264
You don't. Some people use a hack. It is not Samsungs and it is not completely reliable. The 400 Mbps will be very real.
- 4:2:2 10 bit is much better for colourgrading.
It is. Much better, but I don't see myself investing 5-7000 euros for a proper editing system plus monitors (I have a 10bit monitor, but 2.5K, not 4K) to edit that, so really not for most people.
I don't have a Medium Format cam but that does not mean it isn't better IQ wise....
- Lens choice....
This again and again! If someone do not care for long tele lenses are perfectly fine with NX, better than M (with their 5 lenses in total), on par with Fuji (with a better 16-50S and fish eye that they luck completely) and better than Sony. How many lenses do you have?! Most advanced users here have from 5-8, I never had more than 5-6 lenses in any system I ever had (FD I have 5, M42 I have 5 and a few random odd balls)
Where is your 100-400 F4 to F5.6 Fuji has? Where is you 56 mm f1.2?
I have:
7,5 mm Samyang fisheye
12-35 mm f2.8
35-100 f2.8
100-400 f4 to f6.3
20 mm f1.7
45 mm f1.8
45-200 mm F4 to F5,6 (on sale)
90 mm F2.5 Tokina macro (going to sell it)
Next on my list is the 8-18 mm PL F2.8 to F4. UWA with weathersealing.
Venus 7,5 mm might be a good alternative at F2.
60 mm F2.8 Weathersealed macro is on the list.
- add a speedbooster (with stabilisation)?
Yes, m4/3 is best for that, but is 650$ and the Ultra version is soft outside the center, plus you have to own EF lenses to stabilize,
No. The body is stabilised.
so more money (much more than m4/3) and huge size and weight. and we have a SPEEDBOOSTER (not electronic though) for every lens existed and for less money, but not electronically, it may happen though, we will see. The speedbooster is NX-L
It is no there.
- 180 fps slomo?
Yes, great, I have 120f in NX1, GH4 was 96 and Sony crops significantly in 120. We are covered, 120 is quite impressive already, and I am not sure how sharp and whatnot the 180frames will be.
180 frames per second is better.
- Flip outscreen?
I never missed that, it is a plus for someone, for me I have come to appreciate the NX screen because I can't damage it in anyway, and I shoot with the camera at a center position. For Flip it is mandatory. For greater projects you can have perfectly good monitors (7 inches) from 119$. Anyway, even though we have plenty of monitors around, I have never used one.
You don't miss it. Most do.
- 3,7 MP EVF (!!)
I have never used mine. NX1's is great anyway, probably the best I have seen so far (even from a lot more expensive video cameras). I used it recently with the battery grip, just to look professional but not a real use for me. The OLED screen at the back is incredible, and I use the touch functions all the time.
If you would shoot BIF with 600-800 mm FL you will like a good and FAST EVF!
- low light -4 eV autofocus?
In no way the GH4 will have better AF than Samsung! Everyone is talking about a more polished software version of GH4. I have used AF in NX and I consider it to be second for video after Canon's Dual Pixel, with the a6300 it was more unpredictable.
For video....yes. For stills...no. For video...GH5 must first show before we can claim. Samsung is really good there!
- Add on equipment for mik;s etc?
There are Saramonic ones for 99$ already, I do not seriously see Panasonic sell to0 many of those. (if you add to the price the 100euros log, the 400+ XLR thingy, and a few other things, you are going video camera territory, so you see, a video camera, is not making sense only for me, but a lot of video people).
Want to compare with some other video equipment they can buy with similar performance? It is cheap. Which is why people are so interested (videographers).
The only thing NX1 has left is a 28 MP APS-c sensor. Virtually everything else is inferior to GH5. At least on paper.

Pana just reached NX20 territory!
NX30 with GX8. With better DR and better allround lowest ISO btw. NX1 sensor is great. I never argued about that. Even if GH5 will be better we should have no illusions: IF it is better it will be minimal. But it won't come close to NX1.
What it means for you or anyone else only you can tell. But the specs of the GH5 are clear which is why it gets so much attention everywhere.
The specs are right, and unlikely Sony, I am sure they will work. The point is if it is enough to change system right now. This is for the individual to answer too. For some professional videographers it is a dream. I have some friends pre-ordering soon, when they arrive, I will let you know.
I just wish we all be happy and well until then, because it would be almost half a year until they arrive in Greece (the pre order will be from European sites, as they will be really late for the Greek market)!
Yes.It is just equipment. I have to say the constant reassurance here that the NX1 IS still the best out there sometimes annoys me since it is so focussed on tow aspects:
1) Sensor
2) Personal experience nad that means lack of experience with other cams (like Em1mk2, like XT2, like A6500 etc).
Everyone believes for their systems that they are the best, it is human nature. Do not forget that NX1 is a 2 years+ camera, every flagship that is produced from now on will seriously challenge NX for the first time in a couple of years, and surpass it for sure eventually.
Everyone has their advantages and disadvantages, it is funny though, that the camera I would like to own most, is the X-T2, which is the only one with no IBIS and no touchscreen, so not the most advanced features-wise.
If money weren't an issue, I would have Em1ii, X-T2 and GH5 with their accustomed lenses, they are great cameras. The previous generation though, were very far behind NX, that's is why people here went for the NX system, together with the excellent carry around NX500, and a NX300/3000 for throw around/crashcam one could have an excellent system for most cases.
I am videocentric, so for the very first time, I would like an Olympus, a Fuji but no other cameras to complete my 3 camera kit on those systems. Panasonic is the closest to that with the GH5/G85(GX85)/GX850, and from those three (four) options, the entry level and the flagship isn't out yet.
The point (and you see that I was the one started the GH5 thread) is for how long NX will be relevant, and it holds its ground quite well in my opinion, when it is obsolete, this forum won't be visited by you, I am quite sure!
