Advice for friend - D5300: 18-140 or 18-55 + 70-300

I have a friend who's moving to his first dlsr. He's leaning towards a D5300 which I support. He wants to shoot family - including a new grandchild - and travel photos.

He's trying to decide between a kit with the 18-140 or a package with the 18-55 and 70-300 (non-VR).

I'm inclined to steer him to the 18-140 (which I have for my D7000). Seems like a more practical alternative and a better quality lens than either of the ones in the package. It seems to me that if he goes with the package he'll use the 18-55 for the family shots, but for travel neither one is ideal and you don't really want to carry both of them.

On the other hand, the package deal comes with a few accessories that he doesn't have that would be good for a newbie and costs $200 less. Perhaps the package plus a 35 1.8 for the same total as the camera plus the 18-140?

Thoughts?
