I'm still using the (kit lens) 18-55 and like the results. From what I read on photozone.de, the 16-55 2.8 is not that much better in terms of IQ and it lacks OIS.

Would it then justify the upgrade?

Unless the value of your 18-55, used, is a make-it-or-break-it financial issue, I don't see this as an either/or. I own both. I had originally planned to sell my 18-55 after I bought the 16-55, but they are two different use-case lenses. The 18-55 is a great all around-er lens. I suspect you'd miss having it if you sold it. Light, small, excellent image quality, OIS. Terrific in decent light, unobtrusive. The 16-55 draws a different, is sharper, and is terrific in low light situations. I would not be happy with "only" the 18-55 once I used and saw the results from the 16-55. And for maximum IQ and rendering, I'd not be happy with the 18-55 once I had used and made prints from the 16-55.

And as others have said, the extra 2 mm of wide-ness are not trivial with the 16-55.

Buy the 16-55 and play with it. If YOU feel that it makes the 18-55 redundant, then sell it.

Excellent points. I dont own the 16-55 but what u say makes alot of sense. When shooting my 18-55 at 55mm the 2.8 would make a big difference in some situations. If it had OIS , i would be all over it and likely keep the 18-55 for the reason u suggest.
