Trouble Choosing a Point and Shoot: G7x Mk 2, G5x, G9x, etc
Dec 30, 2016
I wasn't going to start another thread, but I have some topics that I haven't seen addressed in other threads.
I'm an enthusiast, or perhaps an enthusiastic Amateur photographer. My main camera body is a Nikon D90 paired to a 70-200 f/2.8 . I also use a D300s paired with a 35mm 1.8 for scenery. My current Point and shoot is an older Canon SD1100 IS that I bought second-hand mostly for the time-lapse video feature. It also serves as my pocket camera when I can't or don't wish to carry the DSLRs.
I'm looking to upgrade my pocket camera (which is usually in a small case on my belt) for better IQ as well as keeping the time-lapse video feature, and I take some 1080p video. I'm also very interested in the Night Star Trail and lapse features of the Canon G series. I'm also very interested in the touch-screen features and controls of the Canon G series. Admittedly, the articulated screen of the G5x would be very convenient as I've often shot from mere inches above the ground.
1080p and 60 fps is the normal video that I'm used to shooting, but I've never tried viewing anything bigger on our Sony 46" TV. But, the large file size could be a burden for computer and storge.
I find myself shooting mostly RAW these days, and some PP in Lightroom 6 that was recently purchased. I enjoy wildlife, scenery, family action, and photographing from an airplane.
Been reading lots of reviews both here and Cameralabs. The Lumix LX100 is somewhat attractive, especially for the 4k video, but the G series Canons really have my attention for the touch screen and design and 1.8-2.8 lens. I enjoy low-light photography. Not sure why I haven't looked at the Nikon P and S models.
I really like the small size and pocketability of the G9x but I'm sure I would miss the faster lens and swivel screen of the G5x or the flip screen of the G7x Mk 2, It also seems recommended to get the Digic 7 processor ?. So it seems I'll be choosing between the G5x and G7x MK 2.
I would also appreciate any recommendations for a small camera case for the G5s or G7x MK 2 that would hang on my belt or over the shoulder. This looks like a very knowledgable group and I'm anxious to hear your thoughts and recommendations.
