No doubt I should have given it more time, taken it on more outings, but it doesn't matter. I'm keeping the K-S1, but after playing with it a bit more I intend to relegate it to the times when I'm truly in need of going light, or at least lighter. After thinking it over I decided I didn't want to get used to using the K-S1 in Manual mode with but one dial. I did it on the above mentioned outing and had considerable difficulty. It was worse with the EPM-2 so I used that camera in the P setting. I suppose I could do that with the K-S1 as well, but the problem I had with the EPM-2 was that in the early (and dark) mornings a P setting would slow the shutter speed such that almost any movement was blurred. With the K3 in Manual I could play with the aperture and shutter speed adjustments (on two dials) in order to give me maximum shutter speed. Perhaps I could do something close to that with the K-S1 in the Tv setting. I'll have to put that to the test the next time I take it out.
In the meantime I sent for the K-S2. $499 from B&H. Both B&H & Amazon have increased the price of the K-S2 to $526, but the $499 price still appears here and there. I read some more reviews and with a decent lens (the 18-135 lens was mentioned) the K-S2 is supposed to provide excellent image quality.
B&H gave me an estimated delivery date of Thursday, January 5th.
If it seems as though I don't think the K-S1 is as wonderful as some others think, I want to say that I think image quality is of primary importance and the K-S1 as evidenced by the shots from the last hike provides excellent image quality. And that means I intend to keep the K-S1. One the other hand the K-S2 should provide me with the type of handling that I'm used to. So I expect to use the K-S1 like i do the EPN-2. That is, if I've twisted a knee or a shoulder and want to go really light, I can use the EPN-2 in the P mode, but I will also be able to use the K-S1 in the P mode but I'll be trying it with the Tv mode next.
It might not sound as though I have an overwhelming need of the K-S2 since I have the K3, but what can I say? Maybe you needed to be here.
