Transfer from old to new Android Smartphone

I'm very inexperienced with Android and my wife is going from SamsungDUOS(SM-G355H) to Moto G4.

Google has so many hits I don't know which approach to take and am therefore asking for some practical advice.

My first thought was to merely backup one device to a local PC via USB and then restore to the other.  Will this work and will it cover all phone + installed apps (eg WhatsApp, Line, as well as SMS and phone contacts?  Would rather prefer to avoid using Google a/c unless very strongly recommended.

There seem to be a plethora of Apps (some requiring a scan of a code (haven't sorted how to do that yet).

Sorry this is all basic - I'm sure it'll make a lot more sense once I get started - just don't want to mess anything up.  Note that the SD card doesn't work in the Samsung and neither phone has been 'rooted' as far as I know.  Thanks.
