although a short review, I tend to agree

I had this lens for a couple of years and never once took a sharp image with it wide open that I was impressed with from a technical perspective.  I'm a fan of lenses which offer a sharp center and quickly fall off towards the periphery of the image (ie, 85L II) as I believe that's a great way to add character to a portrait.  But the 50mm f/1.4 isn't even sharp in the middle.  It's just mush.  Using it on a crop body is even worse as the pixel density of modern APSC sensors stresses the already weak optics even further.

There's a reason I own exactly one 3rd party lens and it's the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art and that is because ALL of Canon's native 50mm options have MAJOR compromises.  The Sigma Art does as well (focusing issue) but that's one I can live with as most of the issue is remedied by the Sigma dock.
