Hello I'm a run and gun shooter doing 60% stills and 40% video. I'm gonna replace my Canon 600d soon and I'll be choosing one of these two great competitors. I've been really struggling to choose cause there are significant advantages and disadvantages on both sides . I'm gonna list some of these below and please HELP ME !!!! I'm really strugling to make a decision!!!!

FUJI XT2

amazing colours, film modes and jpegs: really the biggest point to choose Fuji. Is Sony so bad with colors ?

excellent lenses and zooms : really the zooms (16-55) will help a lot when run n gun shooting

very good 1080p video : Sony has got bad 1080p

ergonomics: nice Fuji advantage but I can live with less buttons

No ibis: really the sadest point for me . Fuji has got excellent primes but when shooting video they're useless if not in a tripod.

I won't be getting the battery grip!!!!!!!! : really a Fuji with a battery grip is close in size to a Nikon d810 ( or maybe bigger) and form factor is huge for me. Will the lack of the grip hurt ?

SONY A6500

form factor : I really don't wanna carry a lot

ibis: helps a ton with video . Again I don't wanna carry a lot and despite Fuji has got excellent primes I think without a tripod they're useless in video . Or not ?

120fps: again big thing for my videos

focusing system : don't know if it's sony's advantage cause Fuji is very good at it

touch screen: very nice for focus pulls in video

high iso: Sony and Fuji are close

rolling shutter: really bad especially when not in tripod . Or ibis eliminates that ?

overheating: don't think the a6500 overheats that much

sony system does not have a zoom lens: it's got crappy ones and the zoom lens helps a lot when run n gun shooting.

Plese help me make a decision!!!! Do you think the Fuji image quality compared with a lens like the 16-55 f2.8 is alone a big reason to push you away from the numerous features of the a6500??

The 16-55 does not have Ibis neither... I would go Sony in your case.

As a sony shooter I'll tell you that FUJI is more aggressive in providing top glass for APSC, so if good glass and support is important, I'd say get the FUJI.

I shoot 98% full frame, but I do have the 6000, 5100 and 5000, and I use the 50/1.8 exclusively on these for a walk around.

My next camera may very well be a FUJI, but time will tell.

Honestly dude, you should never shoot handheld video with anything besides a global shutter camera. It should always be stabilized or on a monopod. Too risky with any DSLR or mirrorless. Go get a BM Ursa if you want to hand hold.

Unfortunately, most of the E mount APS-C lenses are just okay at best. Fuji is way ahead here.

And no one is saying it much, but using FE lenses on the A6500 isn't a great option either as you lose resolution while gaining size and cost.

All this hype about the A6500, but there's hardly a lens worth mounting to it. Sony doesn't seem committed to the series - making bodies, but hardly doing anything to the E mount lens selection for the last 3 years. Am I missing something here?

Fuji has OIS on the 10-24 and the 18-55 zooms a well as the 50-140. The 16-55 may not be the best choice for video if you want stability.

Only hand held for video comment? Hilarious, I use hand held all the time for video on my A7r2 and its very smooth and nice with IBIS.

However I would double check how well IBIS works on A6500 as there was a review where it was mentioned IBIS on A6500 on video did not work well. I find it hard to believe so definitely ask around on that if that is the prime feature you want.

XT2 video rated higher than A6500 in the Camera Store review of these 2 cameras. I was surprised by that. XT2 is 6K downsampled to 4K. Also no overheating issues with XT2 but there is now an ignore the heat setting in A6500 but the camera can get quite hot in that case.

The touch screen point and drag feature is apparently laggy and again you mentioned that as a feature you found appealing. So again more research is needed on these points to make sure the camera's video strengths are what you are after.

One feature I assume A6500 has (A7r2 does) is digital zoom in 4K with no loss of resolution. Wow, its so cool, a power zoom on any lens. Really takes away the need for a zoom lens in video.

As far as lenses go for Sony, the Zeiss 24 1.8 is universally loved as an amazing lens. The Zeiss 16-70 zoom is popular but apparently sample variation. I got one for my wife and its a lovely lens but read about it on the net and you will see lots of split opinions about it.

Sony can run any lens ever made. A lot with full AF via smart adapters. So when someone says the lens selection is limited its true only for native lenses (and there are more than what is being said). Sigma 19 and 30 1.4 are popuilar chocies, the Zeiss Touits also come in a Sony emount, all the FE lenses some of which are not that large - 35 2.8, 28 2 for example. There is a 50 1.8, a couple of zooms the 10-18 is supposed to be good (it also works on full frame too).

Sony mau have more features for video - again you'd have to check but things like Zebra stripes to prevent overexposure, smoothness of AF in video (my A7r2 is seamless), touch the screen for instant AF like a smart phone.

If you do plan later to go to Sony full frame then some of your lens choices could be able to be used there if you get some FE glass.

XT2 is a very mature camera. As you mention AF is probably similar but I suspect AF is better on A6500 for video especially with the touch screen tap and focus point selection.

IBIS is bound to be useful for video but how much is the question. IBIS is definitely an advantage to stills as well although most of the Fuji zooms have OIS.

You have to be more careful about which software you use to develop your images with Fuji as there are variable results from different softwares. Not sure how that applies to video as most here don't get one for video even though now its good for video (it was shockingly bad before).

No real bad decision here. Good luck with your decision. I'd say more research is needed on those key points. Ask on the Sony Nex forum.

I shoot handheld as well, just saying, if someone has that big of an issue then stop hand holding. You use a camera that costs 3 times as much. I'd buy an Arri if I had the money and would hand hold all day. Point is, with this price of a camera, stop complaining and shoot another way. If this was a post about the A7r2 then we wouldn't be having this conversation, would we?

Doesn't the A7r2 have a 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization? So problem solved! Just spend 3 times as much on a A7r2!

I can tell you right now a Fuji XT-2 with grip is MUCH smaller that a gripped D810.

Yes, the Zeiss Touits for E-mount (12, 32, and 50 macro) are fantastic lenses, especially if one can get them on sale. I have the 12 E-Mount for my Hassy Lunar, and all three (X-Mount version with aperture ring) for my Fujis.

Love them.

Yes - they're good. So that's three. Not very many great choices for A6500.

Since you do 40% video it seems like the a6500 with the 18-105mm f/4 would be a great combo for you. I had that lens with the a6000 and it's a great, affordable lens for both stills and video. Fuji has improved with video but Sony probably still has the edge. I now shoot exclusively Fuji, but have no problem recommending Sony for your use case scenario.

Nope.....i had to get a NEX 3c as was traveling with 18 month old twins and did not think i could carry them and a 5D + lenses through the airport ...got back decided i need a small travel cam with a view finder so looking at the NEX 6 then the A6000 but the only sony lenses worth having are very expensive like the zeiss 24mm F1.8 at £800GBP...however it is a good lens but my research showed that the canon 24mm F2.8 stm optically matched it...so i get a new gray import 24mm stm delivered inc all tax for £99 and a second hand 100D/SL1 for £200 ..( luved the touch screen)so saved £500 quid over the lens alone never mind a body as well

Cut to the conclusion sony APS-c lenses seem to be mostly poor ...the good expensive ones can be matched with bargain basement canon lenses ...had this argument on here before ..some one disagreed with me so i say pick a sony APS-c lens any lens and i will prove it ...he did not pick one

The Sony FE 28-70 is an excellent, sharp, lightweight and inexpensive lens which I use with my Sony NEX-7.

You know, there is another thread going on about the same subject?

X-T2 vs A6500

All this hype about the A6500, but there's hardly a lens worth mounting to it. Sony doesn't seem committed to the series - making bodies, but hardly doing anything to the E mount lens selection for the last 3 years. Am I missing something here?
Yes, the Zeiss Touits for E-mount (12, 32, and 50 macro) are fantastic lenses, especially if one can get them on sale. I have the 12 E-Mount for my Hassy Lunar, and all three (X-Mount version with aperture ring) for my Fujis.

Love them.
Yes - they're good. So that's three. Not very many great choices for A6500.
Nonsense, there are many good lenses available for the Sony e-mount system. And the A6500 has 5-axis stabilization, so it is not limited to using mainly OSS lenses.

Greg
Doesn't the A7r2 have a 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization? So problem solved! Just spend 3 times as much on a A7r2!
So does A6500 hence the info I gave about the useability of IBIS.

Greg.

I have had alot of sony products from nex7, a6000, 5n, a7. Difference for me with the fuji is that i no longer spend hardly anytime editing anymore - the joegs are that good. I chose fuji because they have the triple crown in lenses:

1) quaility build and iq

2) compact

3) affordable

the Sony's cannot match these three things. Seems like only fuji, panny and olympus can.
