Just a guess.

I don't know what processors are in the different camera models.

There must be a reason why DNG hasn't been offered until now, unless it is due to the efforts of the people that got Kaplinka to work...

I would say it is due to the efforts of Roland et al, who made Kalpanika capable of producing high quality DNG files. It seems like too much of a coincidence that the two happened at basically the same time. It could be that Sigma might have felt it was not necessary, but then discovered how much interest there was, when people started using Kalpanika to make DNG files, and decided it might be a good idea to add it to their cameras. After-all, people like me have mentioned in this forum long ago that a DNG capability in a Sigma camera would solve many problems that people have with Sigma cameras, and likely increasing sales of Sigma cameras. Mr. Yamaki may have agreed with that sentiment and decided it is about time. (I wonder if he kicks himself for not pursuing that idea sooner.)

It's interesting how good the DNG files are, considering the comments of the nay-sayers here in this forum, who commented that it wouldn't make sense to made DNG files from Sigma RAW files.
