Agree. I meant if do not want to switch the external flash on and in the same time do not want this pop up flash, even in auto mode, you can hold the flash botton and turn the rear dial till the sign of no flash appear. Alternative to that in D5300 for example is to turn the mode dial to the no flash auto mode (just beneath the auto green camera sign).

I do that when I want non-flash shots in between flash shots.
