The diffusion in this image is not due to halation. Halation is the "haze" apparent in an image due to light scattering in the emulsion layer of film. Film manufacturers try (tried) to minimize the problem by an anti-halation coating on the back of the film which absorbs some of the scattered light and prevents it from relecting back up into the emulsion.
