help with 15-85 lens

I have an M3 and a SL-1 and rented a 15-85 to try on both cameras but ultimately didn't have a chance to try it on the SL-1.  So this image is on the M3 with the canon adapter.  The lens has been returned but as I looked at some of the images I became confused about what I was seeing.  This is the first image I've posted on dpreview.  I'll try to describe what I'm seeing.  This photo was 1/160 at f8 and iso 200 with the focal length at 18mm (29mm equivalent).  The center is sharp and was where the focus point was.  If I scroll sideways to either the right or left side, the image becomes soft.  However, the foreground corners are pretty sharp.  DOF at f8 and this focal length would suggest that the sides should be in focus as they are roughly the same distance from the camera.

Could someone explain to me why the sides are soft?  Is it just this 15-85?  I'll post this in the canon lens forum as well.

Thanks in advance,

Alan
