Hi,
In July, I got myself an X-Pro2 + 35/f2.0 to replace my Olympus E-P1 with its 17/f2.8 pancake. My plan was to stick with a standard lens for a while to get used to the camera and readjust to the composition of a 50 (equiv). I also rented a 16-55/f2.8 for a weekend of festivities around my parents' golden wedding anniversary. While it's a fantastic lens for events, I usually prefer smaller lenses. I also don't have the budget for that lens (it's around €1100 over here).
The goal is to go wider for landscape. I've used an 28mm a lot on Olympus OM before and I'm definitely looking at something wider (so 16mm or shorter).
For tele, I really like doing informal portraits. DOF doesn't need to be razor thin, but I must be able to get good background separation. I used the 90/f2 on my Olympus OM before and I absolutely love the concept of a premium tele prime, but for travel, zooms do offer more flexibility.
Here are some other options I'm looking at:
1. Fuji primes
Primes are always my first choice. But a setup with 2 new primes would definitely be more expensive than the 16-55. For example, the 14+56 combo would set me back at least €1700.
2. Third party wide angle + Fuji tele zoom
Because the 14mm is already over €800, switching to the Samyang would save me a pretty penny. The 12/f2.0 is around €350 and it's getting really good reviews, though there seems to be some sample variance. I don't mind the manual focus for a landscape lens.
As for the tele zoom, there's the 55-200, which is around €650, or there's the 50-230 which I can get for an amazing €190! That's less than 1/3 of the price, but I understand that with a faster OIS and opening, the 55-200 could be usable in up to 3 stops darker situations. That's quite an advantage!
3. Adaptor rings for the long end
I still have an Olympus Zuiko OM 50/f1.4 and 90/f2.0 macro as well as a Leica Summitar 50/f2. Adaptor rings from B.I.G. for both would set me back a grand total of €60. I can't find any reviews for the adaptor rings by that company but it's German. Add the Samyang 12mm and the bill totals at €410.
4. Combinations of the above!
There's plenty of combinations possible, e.g. a 56/f1.2 with a Samyang, or a 14/f2.8 with a 50-230 or with adaptor rings.
What would you do?
