Unfortunately, I noticed that in a number of my shots - could be the camera but more likely it was my lack of skill with it.Neat shot - I love how the lion blends into the surroundings. Looks like the camera focused on the grass behind the lion, though. Does it misfocus often or was it due to the low contrast ?

As for appearance of focus, In addition to exact focus length missing the lion a bit, I am not sure, but I suggest your processing is part of the appearance mentioned.
I often see RAW shots processed in a way, especially when viewing the original, that look like there is a layer of plexiglass around the primary subject. I think it must have to do with PP choices regarding noise reduction, sharpening, I don't know, I have very limited Jpeg PP skills. I think this highlights the exact spot of focus, in this case behind the lion, more than if PP differently.
Again, I like your photo a lot. I would not have viewed it at full size except due to the focus comments.
Choose smallest focus bracketes and focus on what you want not what the camera chooses....Unfortunately, I noticed that in a number of my shots - could be the camera but more likely it was my lack of skill with it.Neat shot - I love how the lion blends into the surroundings. It looks to me like it focused at the center on the grass where the lion wasn't. He should have used center area focused on the LION.Neat shot - I love how the lion blends into the surroundings.
