A f2.8 lens is a f2.8 lens, a lens doesn't care what sensor is sitting behind it. A 17-55 2.8 stabilized lens will always be better in low light situations than a f4 with or without IS.

Would you also argue that f/1.8 is f/1.8 and that therefore iphone 7 with f/1.8 lens is better in low light than 80d with f/2.8 lens?

Are you suggesting that my 70-200 f2.8 lens suddenly becomes a f4 lens when mounted on my 80D?

I´m suggesting that f/4 lens of the larger system can be better than f/2.8 of the smaler system. It will bring the same, or even more light onto the sensor, it will provide more resolution for many reasons. Therefore speed of the lens is not really comparable parameter between systems...

The aperture of a lens never changes....It lets the same amount of light in no matter what.

The f-number N or f# is given by: N=F/D

where F is the focal length, and D is the diameter of the entrance pupil (effective aperture).

A 1.4 is a 1.4. If you have a smaller sensor it just doesn't use the whole image coming in.

You cant get more light through a opening just because the sensor is smaller.

There is a lot of snobbery still going on about full frame cameras, I think that you just need the right tool for the right Job, both systems can give excellent results in different situations. For my personal use my 80D has never let me down, I have used various full frame cameras, and even hired a 6D for 10 days, but since I like doing all sorts of different photography, from landscapes to wildlife, street photography and portraits from time to time, the APS-C tool is (at least for me) the most flexible choice. I have never needed to shoot at higher ISO values than 6400, (I rarely go over 3200), so I don't see the point of paying a lot of extra cash on a FF system, it just simply wouldn't make my photography any better.

The Eos M5 looks like a great little package to me, I know the sensor will deliver stunning results (idem 80D), I will probably get one as a second body that my wife will learn to use and also for having a great travel kit. I just hope Canon will come out with some better lenses soon.

I don't think that it is snobbery.  In most situations a photo can be taken just as well with an AP-C sensor as with 35 mm.  In some cases, the photo is much improved with a FF & fast glass.  Also in some situations, the capabilities of your af system can make the difference.  In a pinch, I have used my cell phone, however I prefer the right equipment for a given situation.  Bab
