Re: Quick Menu and soft lcd buttons

I finally got into customizing the camera's quick menu option. I like how you can customize up to 15 things on this menu, rather than having to wade through the full menu. This is a better user interface than Olympus offers.

In terms of user interface, it is a little clunky in that you don't seem to be able to move items in the 15 menu slots. Instead, if you want to change the order, you need to deselect the item in the menu slot, and then re-select it, putting it into the slot you want it to be in (I wanted my 5 most important menus to be in the first 5 slots). My current assignment is:

  • Photo style
  • AF mode
  • ISO
  • White balance
  • Flash mode
  • Multi-metering mode
  • HDR
  • AFS/AFF (single/continuous focus)
  • Movie speed/resolution setting
  • Enable/disable touch screen
  • Bracketing
  • Flash adjustment
  • Filter effect (art modes in Olympus speak)
  • Shutter type (auto/electronic/manual)
  • Silent mode

Rather than having more buttons on the body or lenses, Panasonic has 5 soft buttons that you can select with the touch screen. I currently have it set up as:

  • FN6: Enable/disable wifi
  • FN7: Enable/disable preview
  • FN8: Auto Focus mode (I may change this, since I now have it on quick menu)
  • FN9: Photo style (I may change this as well)
  • FN10: Highlight/shadow

The other buttons that I currently have set are:

  • FN1: Digital zoom
  • FN2: Quick menu
  • FN3: Wifi (note since I direct focus area set, this is used for focus instead)
  • FN4: Preview

It is a pity that Panasonic has randomly chosen which few menu items are available for custom buttons. Many time I want to use some useful function with custom button but it is not possible. Still Panasonic has completely useless decoration buttons too.
