I don't know if there are any other adventurous souls out there but I downloaded and installed On1 Photo RAW pre-release today hoping it may give a useful alternative to RAF file editing, etc.

Installation fine on Windows 10 64-bit, the program seems a bit slow compared to the current version 10.5, but hopes were high.

On selecting one of my Fuji XT-2 raw files, it gave an error warning 1005 and did nothing else; tried this on several RAF files, same problem; JPGs open fine but I didn't bother with any editing as I can rely on 10.5 for that.

I have reported back to On1 on that issue and wondered if any others had tried the software yet?

compared to LR.

The following are from dew on a very nice flowering plant. Taken w/X-T2/50-140. The first is On1, the second LR w/normal sharpening on each. I also added a little clarity in LR and structure in On1. They are both crops and neither was resized. Admittedly I like the finer grain in the On1 image. BTW I had no trouble with my MacBook. Be sure to click on larger image. BTW the WB was a little cooler in the ON1 and I did not change it for either.

An interesting comparison. Ignoring colour, at pixel-peeping level it looks like the On1 conversion (I assume they were raw?) is much better to my eyes although perhaps a little oversharp and contrasty at these settings - the LR version is softer and full of odd artefacts, but it doesn't look like it would ever be able to rescue as much detail from it as the On1 image contains. I'm tempted by the On1 software but will wait a while to make sure that early beta issues are properly sorted out first - if it lives up to some of the early promise, and if it's faster than LR (which is appallingly slow with my Fuji RAFs) then I may finally move on from Adobe.

I downloaded OnOne Photo 10 Yesterday and converted the following RAF It was shot in my X100T with the following settings; RAW+Fine, B&W, NR -2, Sharp +1, HT 0, ST 0, Color 0. There are a lot of the tools from OnOne Photo 10 that are not working in OnOne Photo RAW. Most existing Photo 10 features will be added in mid December with newer content added throughout 2017. No mention of film simulations or camera simulations.

SOOC JPEG: Provia, NR -2, Sharp +1, HT 0, ST 0, Color 0.

SilkyPix DS 7 Pro: Provia, NR -2, Sharp +1, HT 0, ST 0, Color 0.

I have the pre-release installed on Windows 10. It opens X-E2 raw files just fine. It won't open up X-Pro2 files though. I see the thumbnails just fine (probably due to the embedded jpeg. However, when I double click on the file I just get a blank screen with a grey box and a diagonal line through it.

This is a pre-release with the actual release coming middle of next month. Report anything not working properly. I was playing before and it crashed a couple of times. When I restarted the program, it brought up a quick form for me to report what happened. X-Pro2 and especially X-E1 RAFs should load.

This could of course partially be an issue of default sharpening.

If you are game, why not provide the RAW file, I am sure there wouldn't be just me interested??

Is that a "yes"??? ;-)

I'm having no problems with X-T2 files on PC desktop, PC Laptop, or 27" iMac

Currently, ON1 RAW does not support compressed RAFs. There will be an update in December that will hopefully bring comressed RAF support.

Hello, Deed,

I usually don't link to files but I will give it a try. Artistically it is a dud but you asked.

Test File Only (no creative value)

Bob
... I noticed that your On1 image was taken at F8 and the LR at F4 ... Could at first not get my head around as to why thoe drops below were tack shapr in one image but blurred in the other.

Mild (280 at Radius and threshold 0.5 in Capture One)

More aggressive (not really...) (230 at radius 1.6, threshold 0.5)

Everything else left at default, so no clarity or detail was added.

Here is the LR version, full of strange halos:

I find your photo very artistic! Haha, right ... however, if you printed this large and framed it the question would be: bin or wall, bin or wall ...

Here is the C1 full conversion (certainly none of those weird worms here, what do you think??:

Thanks for the opportunity always good fun!!

I use Capture One for my "other" systems but will experiment with it for the Fuji files because it does a fairly good job. BTW I think the image was for the bin AND i took the photo on a tripod at various local lengths and may have gotten them confused. Sorry. However I did reprocess the image in PS/ACR and then used only Topaz In-Focus to slightly over sharpen to take a look at the darker, OOF sections of the image. It did not demonstrate the wormy grain noted previously. Hmm? Here it is:

PS/ACR over-sharpened with Topaz In-Focus

On1 raw is full of bugs at the moment. The indexing of your pictures takes for ever. After been indexing for an hour or similar it stops. Apparently a memory leak. So you have to force quit the program. Memory leak presumably.

Today I found that all my pictures and folders fron this year was gone from my external picture disk.

Of course I suspect On1 and all the force quits from cuasing that even if I don't have any proof. Well no catastrophy, I have back ups. It just takes a few hours to restore them to my working disc.

The program also crashes very often. I think it will be a real challenge for the team at On1 to sort out all things until the official launch December 19th.

I think this will be a very nice program one day. However it will take time.

Until the 19th I will avoid using On1 raw and use 10.5 instead.

Good thing I didn't index the folders. It must be a herculean effort to create a RAW converter for every format out there. The videos in all the links they send show promise. I will wait for December as well. Not as if there aren't any other RAW converters out there.

From the original file, it appears that OnOne has applied a very high radius sharp - even the blurred background looks harsh, and it's a little noisy.

Here is my version, developed in LR with defaults, sharpened in PS with smart sharpen, rad 1.2, amount 170, noise red 10.

I don't see any bad artefacts, but the difference between sharp and blurred areas is quite nice. Of course, the DPR gallery has reduced the sharpening somewhat.

At print size, roughly 50%, it looks great.

Curiosity was my only motivation. I am going to wait for the final version and then experiment. Yours is nice.

Be sure to take a look at the image I post in the weekly images. It is of a Christmas Cactus flower developed in PS/ACR w/Topaz in-focus sharpener and compared with Iridient w/ its sharpening tools. That one may be over sharpened and I will purposely post a large version of each. I am pleased with the evolution of the "X" bodies and lenses. Makes me want to shelve my Dslr's for good.

Why are you converting 2 different images? Surely the best way to compare converters is to use the same image, preferably the F8 file.

Anyone know what they mean by the upgrade?
