Review of the EF-M 28mm f3.5 Macro for macro use only

I haven't used this lens for anything other than macro yet, I may update this review later once I've used it more extensively. I quite like this lens, it does a lot right. For the money it's quite sharp and relatively easy to use *(for a macro). On the down side, macro is hard and unless you're focus stacking your depth of field at non-diffraction affected apertures is literally a fraction of a millimeter. Macro being hard is not a failing of the lens and I think Canon did a lot right to make the lens relatively easy to use for macro.

• I like the built in LED lights. They aren't macro ring light flash units and they aren't going to get you super fast macro shutter speeds but for the size and weight of the lens they help quite a lot.
• The IS is reasonably useful. For macro subjects ANY movement is a problem and while I haven't specifically tested for a comparison with IS on and IS off, my gut feeling is that it has helped one or two marginal shots.
• Keeping in with the theme of the EOS M system the lens is tiny, light well priced and easy to use.
• The pop-up flash on the M3 works really well with the lens. It will get you 1/200s shutter speeds at all but the very closest subjects and I quite like the lighting angle being offset from the centre line. At super macro distances the lens shades the subject but you have to be trying to focus on a subject stupidly close for it to affect the shot.

If you're using the M system, you want a macro lens but you don't want to go all the way to the 100L macro with a right light then this is a great lens for you.
