DG 610 Super, SD1 Merrill off camera operation

Hi

I have tried all combinations to make my EF 610 DG Super working off camera  using my Sigma SD1 Merrill in camera flash as a trigger. It works as P and TTL and wireless off camera although it is tottaly automatic and you have no control whatsoever on the final result if you want to use "creative" exposures.

The manual states that there is a "Slave" mode for which I show below the relevant page

Is this a lie????

I tried all of the above plus multiple combinations, having the camera in P first, having the Flash in TTL first, camera in A, S and M. Nothing works.

Whenever I press the shutter, the incamera flash issues a preflash (why???), my off camera flash gets triggered and by the time the shutter opens there's no flash anymore, only the light from the incamera flash.

Am I doing something wrong? Is my camera faulty? Is Sigma lying i.e such facility is unavailable in the SD1???

Please let me know of your thoughts / suggestions as I need to contact Sigma and complain if that is the case... and also the Advertisng Standards Authority.
