For Phil: New Canon Forums needed

Interesting question comes to mind: what is the definition of
professional? Once you've made some money with your photos or once
they have been publicised? (Or both?)
From what I have seen written and what my professional friends say,
being a "pro" means you make more than half your income by taking
pictures. Opinions vary wildly, I would assume...

Glenn
In that case I wont be a pro for quite some time. (I seem to earn good at my current job, getting another 50% of that with my photography seems rather difficult.)

Let's say over 2500 of my photos have been published, either on the internet (about 98%) or for CD/DVD-covers, inlays for magazines and such. Still an amateur, what am I doing wrong? ;)

That reminds me, have to arrange for the shooting of next friday.

Nice behavior and language... coming from someone claiming to be a school administrator! That's unfortunate in and by itself and even more as you clearly missed the point entirely. So much for schools these days.

John
I'm a really serious pro Canon user
I think i'm a pro Canon User
I'm a male jewellery wearer that says Canon
I'm a moron DRebel user

Just listen to ourselves!!!!
Phil must be laughing out loud

It will all be OK
Rob
If he's listening....it may be the perfect time to launch the
'Beginner SLR Talk' forum he talked about a few months back.
With the probable onslaught of Digital Rebels... it may make sense
to reorganize the Canon Forums. What about:
  • New Canon Issues - a catch all, for problems, issues, etc. (where
hopefully most of the new camera users would post)
  • Canon SLR - for technique, real photography questions
  • Canon SLR Lenses - for lenses

Spliting into the DSLR and lens forums didn't help me at all. I'd much rather have preferred a Canon DSLR Forum and a Canon Pro DSLR forum (1D, 1Ds).

The entry-level 10D/D60 questions, focus issues, et al, drown out anything regarding the 1D and 1Ds in the DSLR forum. Especially as it pertains to their use in a professional context.

And most of the lens "reviews" in the lens forum also are of no help whatsoever. Knowing a Sigma lens is "wonderful" on a cropped image circle 10D tells me nothing about its behaviour on a 1D or full-frame 1Ds.

The 1D/1Ds forum on Robs site is now much more useful and informative for those of use who use these higher-end cameras.

And I'd submit that it's exactly those people that you don't want to lose to another site...

Why not? Some are saying that they want another site anyway, so they would be lost to this site anyway. Volume is the thing in a web-site,even tis some do consider themselves to be the smart end of the trade.
What I cannot understand is the desire to alter this site.

If it doesn't serve your needs, fine. You mention Rob's site which is already structured the way you want, so what is the problem?
If I have a more 'technical' question I simply post at Fred's site anyway.
What's fun about this site is that it's fast-moving and eclectic.

There are plenty of pro forums about is that is what you want, or even the pro forum at this site.

a "1 Series" and a "D Series" separated in the forums. It isn't about snobbery but the fact they are 2 completely different animals. The advice seen on one forum would be very different from another, and that is relevant. Other webmasters have done so. I strongly believe it's time has come here as it's only going to get MORE ridiculous in the coming months with new cameras coming on board.........

That's not true. Equally important is the site demographics. Some advertisers would be less like to place ads here if the pros and advanced amateurs who buy all of the latest and greatest cameras, lenses, equipment, and software were non-existent. Is a consumer buying his first-time 10D going to jump into Capture One?
What I cannot understand is the desire to alter this site.

Because I like it here. I've been around for three years, and I have a personal "investment" in the place. But as a 1D/1Ds owner, the cacophony and noise that's the Canon DSLR and DSLR-L forums has simply stopped being useful to me.

When you compose a new post you should be able to indicate if your post refers to a specific camera type. When you browse the forum you would be able to define you preferences (setup a filter). For example: do not show any posts which refer to 10D. Another example: show me only posts which refer to 10D, 30D and 60D. Moderators should be able to modify keyword assignments to correct mistakes.
Trust me. I know more about software design that about photography :)

John

I get it. This is a traffic issue. I just saw that there are 700k messages on this forum!!

Try this then:
Canon Talk
Canon SLR talk
Canon advanced talk

I think it's a mistake to build forums round cameras. Wjat's more experience is not related to models.

This suggestion would move new SLR users into the SLR area and the experienced users would have their own space.

Hope I got the point :-)

Rob
Its not about snobbery.....its about keeping some kind of order and
coherence to a forum.
Exactly!

John
He also was thinking of creating a 'Beginner SLR Talk' forum.

If there's a Digital Rebel.....this forum will be flooded again
where a message can go off the front page in 15 minutes.

And possibly an Advanced forum (for users of all canon DSLR bodies) ..

The problem with a FAQ is will they read it? - I bet most people don't even read the rules let alone do a search, I see plenty of replies of "Read the FAQ" coming up if one is set up though....

I don't know what form the FAQ could take but it could be anything including

Setting the camera up for first use
Checking the camera out

Choices of Lenses (price , recommendations, advising people to NOT buy the Sigma 17-35 etc ;-)
Using the AF and the cente focus point
DOF and how shallow it is compared to a Digicam
Accessories & Essentials (tripods, flashes, batteries, CF cards etc)
What to expect from a DSLR without post processing
Basic USM sharpening settings
List of DOs and DONTs

Etc

All written in plain English and not in Mishkinese (LOL) so everyone can understand ..

but I really wonder if some would ever read it. There are many who never seem to read their manuals (that MIGHT be a 'guy' thing LOL), but I actually tend to wade right into things without reading--but I do read it usually by evening--on new equipment and apps.

Your outline is pretty good--it covers a lot of the points that a new DSLR owner would ask--and is easily answered. Its just the repetition that drives many off. I don't mind answering at all if I can help---but when I've answered the upteenth thing about why the Canon DSLRs don't have a b/w mode--and 'how'--I start to pull my hair. I am always able to bring up good pertinent threads--so the postee should be able to do this also. I hate to be abrupt--its not in my nature, but I really want to shake some of them LOL.

I think a forum with no rules would be fun, but I can why Phil would want to avoid that.

Adam, we've got most of the info laying around here, it just hasn't been collated.

For example, here's a great thread I often give as a reference if someone seems just a tad lost in the new world of DSLR's:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1019&message=5056631

I'm sure we've all got a list of things stuffed into our favourites. I know I've saved umpteen of your threads on lenses!

Canon SLR Camera Hardware - This would cover everythig but Lenses - AF focus discussions could go on, and on forever in this forum - Enjoy Nikon vs. Canon could be here, Trolls can live here as well.

Canon SLR Techniques - Actually discuss different techniques to in taking pictures - This would be a wonderful addition. We could actually talk about taking pictures and making them better!!! Wow what a great forum this would be, and very useful. Would love this type of forum, and not have to wade through all the junk posts in the current forum.

Canon SLR Lenses Forum - Don't touch this forum. This is a breath of freash air.

Maybe we could add one more forum: TLTRM Canon SLR Forum - Too lazy to read manual forum.
