Focus problems with T2i and Sigma 150-600

Hi there.

I recently acquired this lens (Sigma 150-600) with great excitement. I realize that it might not be the best body-lens combo in the world, but until funds for a better body too come along, this is what I have.

However, I am having real trouble getting a sharp focus on pictures of wildlife. Even squirrels in the backyard. It's as if it doesn't even go *through* a pinsharp focus. I am using a carbon fiber tripod with a gimbal head, and have even used a ten second wireless shutter release, so stability should not be the issue. Whether focusing with AF or manually at 10x zoom in the LCD I cannot get a pin sharp image. A large variety of shutter speeds and ISO values doesn't seem to correct the problem, and yet I'm aware that it is much more likely to be me than the lens. I have seen some extremely sharp pictures taken with this lens (not by me, lol) even at 600mm. Does anyone have any suggestions? I also have the sigma USB dock, but have not used this yet. IS fine calibrating with the T2i plausible? If not, what else could the problem be?

Canon EOS 550D (EOS Rebel T2i / EOS Kiss X4)
