Milky Way panorama with XT2
9

I took this last night. The images are each 30 seconds ISO 6400 uncompressed RAW, Velvia, auto white balance and 2 second timer. 16mm F2.8 16-55 lens on a Bushman Gobi pano head atop a Vixen Polarie tracker with a Manfrotto tripod.

I started it a bit late and the Milky Way was quite low although its at about 65 degrees up at dark now.

I am very happy with the performance here and it shows very low noise (some noise reduction in post but not a lot) and good colour and the lens shows no coma wide open making distortion free stitching.

Also surprising it is showing some nebulas quite well (the little pink areas). These are not normally picked up very well with a standard digital camera.

PT Gui Pro was used for stitching. Mercator projection. I would describe the XT2 as an excellent choice for nightscapes. It also does not seem to suppress fainter stars like the Sony hot pixel suppression routine in Bulb mode does. The 16-55 also does extremely well.

The 2 white patches in the sky on the left are the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds which are companion galaxies to the Milky Way. You often see galaxies having small companion galaxies that are gravitationally bound to the main galaxy.

XT2 16-55 F2.8 RAW 30 secs Velvia, Vixen Polarie tracker 9 image panorama in portrait mode PhotoNinja processing and PTGui Pro for stitching.

Greg.
