Thoughts about the new 70-200 f/2.8E FL VR
2

Thought 1: The new Nikon 70-200 f/2.8E FL VR likely removes gaps of Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR II with respect to the Nikon 70-200 f/4 VR

  • Minimum focus distance of 1.1m (3.61 ft). f/4 was 1m (3.3 ft) & VR II was 1.4m (4.6 ft). Almost as good as the f/4.
  • Magnification of 0.21x - almost same as f/4 (0.274x). VR II was much worse 0.12x. So less likely focus breathing.
  • VR 4 stops (same as f/4). VR II was worse at 3.5 stops.
  • Negatives are of course the price increase

Coupled with the small weight reduction - we have less of a case for owning both the f/4 and f/2.8 versions.

Thought 2: Folks say the new lens prices makes the lens non competitive with Canon. In the short term this is true - but folks do not change mounts that frequently just because 1 lens is cheaper on one of the sides. Also when Canon updates its 70-200 to the latest generation it will be likely very similar price to the new Nikon. The 2010-2016 generation 70-200 are priced identical at the moment - so its likely the new Canon 70-200 f/2.8 when it comes out next year - will be either $2700 or $2800. Same case with the 24-70 f/2.8 - the non VR versions of both are identically priced - but the newer Nikon with the VR is costlier.

Unlike the Nikon 24-70 VR vs Canon 24-70, the older Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II has a similar feature set as the new Nikon 70-200 f/2.8E FL VR. So it will be interesting on what Canon will improve and what would be the incentive for the Canon owners to switch to a newer 70-200 f/2.8.

Thought 3: Surprising that the filter size is not 82mm. The f/2.8 zoom trinity remains a mess as far as filter sizes is concerned: 14-24 needs non-standard filters; 24-70mm f/2.8E VR takes 82mm filters and 70-200 2.8 takes 77mm filter size. This should have been 82mm filter size - a potential 16-35mm f/2.8 is likely to be 82mm filter size going by the Canon offering. So it is pretty odd they stuck with 77mm filter size.
