Re: Perils of Infrared Photography

How does everyone process their RAW files for infrared?

I have a converted Panasonic, and prior to the conversion had always just used Lightroom.  I understand that Lightroom has limitations related to interpreting white balance, so I have been initially converting to TIF or JPG using SilkyPix that comes with Panasonic cameras.

I had disregarded SilkyPix for years, thinking it was just some bloatware that got bundled with the new camera, but I am beginning to learn that there are programs that are developed specifically in collusion with the camera manufacturers.  Canon DPP apparently can interpret RAW files more accurately than Adobe.  SilkyPix seems to be distributed with Fuji cameras as well.

I realize this is a subjective, and wide open controversial area for discussion, but the conversion to infrared has me really thinking about this since I effectively cannot use Lightroom as my initial step in processing workflow.

My current workflow is this....

First Lightroom, just because it is how I import and organize everything.

Second, open SilkyPix and select images one at a time

Third, develop that image as either JPG or TIF

Fourth, go back to Lightroom and synchronize the folder, bringing in the new images

Fifth, open in Photoshop and swap channels and make other adjustments.

Once I get some settings that work for me consistently, I will create custom actions in Photoshop.  I find it interesting though that I need to use a different software program now as part of my workflow.
