Got a7rii 3 days ago - two weddings later, conclusion= Tony N is on payola

A wonderful post. Makes me want this camera though I've had no FF cameras since film days. The delight you experienced comes through loud and clear in your eminently readable style.

Thanks and cheers.

The camera is nothing short of incredible. It is the most versatile photographic device ever produced. You want medium format resolution shot in light you could never shoot a medium format? You have it (And no, that 5ds is not in this league)

You want 4k, you have it. Fast autofocus, eye focus, superb tracking you have it.

I got mine 3 days ago. Against all caution I shot two weddings with it. One the day I bought it and one today. I basically plunked a memory card in this new sexy beast and confirmed it was storing. Shouted some glee, screwed it into my spider holster and ran out the door.

Primary lens first wedding was 55mm FE 1.8

Primary lens the second wedding was 16-35 f4

Let me say this camera gave me a mid-photography life crisis. There was one point when I was 10 ' a way from my bride and I started to wonder if I had got a bad copy and it was back focusing. No.. It reflected what this camera can do. Shoot a damn pupil at 10' away sharp.

The absolute beauty of this beast is what Tony misses. How it steps up and says "I'm the mAck.. now how bout you hand me a tall glass of zeiss.. Leica.. Ya that sexy little Leitz trollop is over there in the corner. In the limelight, but don't worry. Me and Nocitlux are going on a date later.

Thats the kind of mind blowing stuff this camera casually pulls. Oh just throw a strap-on on Leica trollop and boom, she's mounted with 5 axis stabilization and enough megapixels to probably out resolve that gorgeous piece of glass (Step up 50 Cron)

But the files.. I have never handled files with this kind of latitude. It keeps up with my a7s (which I found on par with my nikon d800 and ahead of my a7. But that is because I shoot a lot of high iso. I live for pushing the sensor to its sweet spot)

They are just SO JUICY. And they come out of the cam looking like fine art. I'm not even kidding. Even with out post they got this magic.. What did my friend Tom call it?? oh ya, witch craft.

The camera is agile, it is responsive, handles battery well. The stabilization (with native glass at least) is seamless. I have not once yet gone.. Ahh darn is this really worth 4g?

There is no question.

Leave Tony N with his low dynamic range DSLRs, with their mirror slap and shutter slap and absence of stabilization requiring them to be locked down in a tripod with their mirror up focusing with that painfully slow and cumbersome live view which doesnt even know what focusing means. Oh their a little quicker.. ?? Quicker to take less exquisite photos thats for sure.. In big heavy bodies.

Don't get me wrong, DSLRs are fine and beautiful photographic intstruments that can, in many circumstances, compete with the a7rii. BUT - the a7rii steps up to any of these circumstances and will pretty much take the crown. But it does it in all of them.

A true delight. Cameras such as this may spell my end as a photographer. But there is nothing that can compare to the joy I had shooting weddings with it so far. Flash, no flash. It Danced.
Literally just watched his Canon 5d mk IV review and he said everything you said, and the big deal he said was the dealbreaker was the dual card slots, otherwise he would be 100% on the A7RII train (which is understandable, for him getting the shot literally pays the bills and keeps his kids fed!)

these are my feelings. I've been shooting with it now for nearly a year, single card slot and all, it's like cheating in low light. There really isn't anything this camera can't do.

I do find it strange how a large company like Sony did not put dual card slots on a $3500 camera. I wonder what their thought process was?

Size, of course. There are a lot of other options including A-mount if size isn't an issue.

Fuji XT-1? They have USB-3 and dual card slots. Ok they are not full frame but Sony APS-C don't have dual card slots either. Then again Sony bodies are smaller.

Agile and responsive? A7Rii?

Over 3 (closer to 4 than 3) seconds to write an uncompressed raw file? Responsive?

10 seconds to format a 64gb SD card?

What people forget is SHOOTING STYLE. The A7RII is awesome for some and not for others. If you are a run and gunner that takes 5000 images a wedding, you won't like the A7RII. If you are more laid back and concentrate on an image, the A7RII is hard to beat. I sold my Nikon D810 and D4. I use the A7RII and Nikon D750. This is my new combo. A couple of Zeiss lenses with a Zeiss 85mm Batis that is sharper than any Nikon or Canon and you have a formidable camera system. Choosing gear is very personal.

We are amidst a camera revolution and it is an exciting time.
