I went from a D800 to an X-T1.

I have the 10-24mm, 18-55mm, 50-200mm, 23mm f/1.4, 35mm f/1.4 and 56mm.

Primes outclass zooms, period. They are outstanding.

I don't understand you when you say primes outclass zooms. Go to Lenstip.com and look up the evaluations yourself. In the resolution arena, the 16-55 equal or out resolve the primes it's meant to replace. The AF on the 16-55 is faster than all of the primes except for one. Fuji designed the 16-55 to replace the primes in it's FOV range and Fuji did a good job. If you have a converter that supports Fuji's software correction (like LR CC) then the distortion and shading matches the primes again. The 10-24 is up for redesign. I believe the replacement will support 8mm

Hi Cliff

I don't have the 16-55mm. I said the 10-24 is better than the other two zooms.

I would have to agree with you there.

What I can say for sure is that the 23, 35 and 56 are better lenses than the 18-55 and 55-200. I don't think it is that surprising, really. And lenstip confirms it.

The 18-55 and the 55-200 are what I would call consumer zooms. (the XC line is really Fuji's consumer line though). The IQ of those lenses while good is no up to what the Red Badge zooms are capable of.

This is not an indictment of the zooms I have, they give great value.

I'm not a big fan of primes on mirrorless because up to now, the sensor is unprotected from dust. With a DSLR, you have a mirror and a shutter to block the dust from settling on the sensor. Also I learned in my PJ days that switching lenses can make you miss the shot. When it comes to narrow depth of field, you can't beat a fast prime. Unfortunately Fuji doesn't make one yet that will match the thin depth of field of even a Nikon f/1.4 (you would need an aps-c f/0.93 to get the same look).

The next time you're in Las Vegas, I suggest you go to the Valley of Fire State Park in Overton, Nevada (they filmed a Star Trek movie there) or go to the Wave in Utah . Unfortunately, to access the Wave, you need to participate in a lottery as hiking the sandstone formations there is limited to preserve them for future generations. The Southwest US has many natural formations that are unique and interesting. Similar to Göreme and Ürgüp in Nevşehir Province.
