Indeed.  You won't see much difference at f/8.  In fact I've used the kit lens(es) to shoot scenics for years because they're very good stopped down.  You'll benefit from the 17-55's advantages in other types of shooting.

The second shot is actually an entire stop greater exposure than the first.  There's also a definite difference in contrast (check the shadows).  The white balance is quite a bit different between the two shots too.  I'm thinking the sun was slightly veiled in the second shot.  That would explain the differences we're seeing.
