Using live view to focus (predominantly) v/s viewfinder on SL1
Oct 14, 2016
Hello,
I have been experimenting with Live View focusing v/s View Finder focusing and I find LV focusing to be much *FAR MORE* accurate. I have read up on the differences between the 2 focusing systems (contrast detect vs phase detect), and I find that on some of my lenses (40F2.8 STM and the 17-55F3.5-5.6 STM kit lens), LV produces *outstanding* focus each and every time, whereas VF focus is "off" on some of the shots. My 40STMF2.8 definitely produces "softer" images with VF as compared to crisp images using LV focus. I also have the EF 24F2.8 STM which focuses perfectly using VF.
And BTW this is LV auto focus all the time. I have occasionally tried manual focus with 5x / 10x magnification which to me is also superb but on par (not superior) to auto focus on LV.
The SL1 does not have the autofocus "micro adjust" features like some of the higher end DSLR's which means I cannot calibrate the camera with my 2 lenses that do not focus as well with VF.
So the questions are:
1) Can I use LV all the time on at least for 2 of my 3 lenses? I know I don't "look" like a DSLR owner (more like a mirror-less owner) but I cant risk having some of my photos out of focus. And I can live with the slower focus speeds of LV. Also the grid lines help with composition.
2) I assume the battery drains off much faster? How many shots can I expect in full time LV vs VF?
3) Anyone else noticed this behavior with the SL1? Can the SL1 + lenses be taken to a Canon repair center to mate the VF focusing system?
Thanks to hear from everyone.
BR,
Mohan
Edit: I find this difference in focusing when the lenses wide open at F2.8 or F3.5 - shallower DOF. When shooting landscapes or at F7.1 and above, this difference is not noticeable.
