Canon Rebel menus and options

As I am still new to digital and to my new camera, I really need a decent manual that explains how the 1300D works. The Canon manual is truly awful. I have read it several times and can't get very much of use out of it. Is there another manual perhaps written by an actual user that is any better?

Part of the problem is the ludicrously large number of adjustable options digital photography offers. I really can't believe that these are necessary. For example, my main dial has a whole pile of ridiculous things like "food setting" and "nighttime portraits" - all of which are apparently "basic" shooting modes. I can't see myself ever using such things! As a film guy from the old days, I tend to stick to Av, Tv and M and just use the camera's TTL metering.

Then there are all the metering modes, white balance controls, exposure compensation, colour tone, ambience, autofocus modes... by the time you have set all that stuff, the subject will have long since departed!

Any help/advice as to a decent manual would be gratefully received!
