I know what you mean. The "Merrill" look is indeed kind of "baked in" but dependent on the exposure. Lower exposure (ETTL) and lifting shadows results in a harsher look than more exposure (ETTR) and also the 8-16mm lens is softer than the DP Merrills.
And of course the post processing leaves lots of options.
I have no problem to "fake" a Quattro look with the Merrill, but the opposite isn't that easy.
