Re: SL1 vs EOS M-5

For general photography like street, portraits, landscapes and some video (not action stills or pro video), I am wondering what would be a better investment: SL1 with say EF-S 18-135mm IS STM for under $700 versus the new EOS M-5 with EF-M 18-150mm STM for around $1500?

Thanks!!

I bought an SL1 for my wife two years ago. I also just recently bought the 80D. Obviously I have not tried the M5 yet but owning the 80D gives me a bit of idea how its sensor will impress.

The SL1 is a true DSLR, the smallest to date. It can take EF and EF-S lenses. It can use any Canon flash. It can be accessorized to the hilt if needed. It feels solid on my hands. It is small enough to not attract all those stares when traveling. It's light enough for my wife to actually like it. She used it when we toured Italy for the first time more than a year, borrowing my 50mm f/1.4 USM lens and made great pictures possible.

However, I am intrigued by the M5, not enough though for me to recommend it to my wife. She loves the SL1 and she feels it's a "not intimidating" type of DSLR hence makes her comfortable to shoot. The M5 will take some learning, again. And for the same amount of learning, why not a Sony counterpart that does 4k?

For all the performance gaps based on specs, the SL1 is a proper DSLR. The M5 is not.
