Silent mode on a G7 - worked FANTASTICLY well
1

I went to see a friend at a community theater (Old Library Theater in Fairlawn, NJ)

Before getting there I set the camera to ISO 800, silent mode, and LVF only. Lens on the camera was 14-140 II (that is, f/3.5 min). I shot raw + jpeg fine.

I had read that silent mode has more noise than mechanical shutter mode, but I felt I needed to use it in this situation. I have to say, it is kind of freaky shooting without any focus lock beep, no auto-focus assist lamp, no shutter sound ... it really is silent mode.

Well, I have to say, the pictures came out very well indeed, if there was "more noise than in mechanical shutter" it was hard for me to notice that!

I suppose I should post an example. I will post both the OOC jpeg (first) and the converted-from-RAW jpeg (second).

Scene from Gore Vidal's "The Best Man" - OOC JPEG

Converted from RAW

This shot was pretty close. I changed the color temperate slightly, made the American Flag more nearly vertical, and raised blacks somewhat and shadow about half as much. If you look hard, in the OOC jpeg the background is nearly jet black. In the converted from RAW the folds in the fabric are just slightly more visible, more as I saw them when there. Chroma noise reduction was set to about 15 (in Photoshop Elements 14's ACR), that's very light.  In short, I am more pleased than I expected to be!
