Compared SD1 embedded JPEG with processed raw
1

The subject is a 'bob-wahr' fence across the street. I wanted to record the corner technology; but was not really close enough, wrong time of day (tree too bright) and wrong aperture (tree too sharp), ho hum. Shot with 17-70mm 'C' lens.

Whole frame, high res, downsized Lanczos3, embedded JPEG:

JPEG settings all zero except sharpening -0.4, standard color mode, sRGB

Compared 100% crops, FastStone side-by-side:

At right, TIFF export from SPP fully processed in RawTherapee

Although the exposure was reasonable, the scene DR was a little too much for the JPEG at left (see histogram).

Point I'm making is that, for this scene shot at that time of day, the processed raw was clearly superior to my eye.

Techies can observe how the wires pull the corner post to the right. The horizontal pole pushes the next post along to the right: but the diagonal wire in tension pulls on the base of the corner post, thus preventing trapezoidal distortion.

Posts are local Eastern Red Cedar - the most rot- and termite-resistant wood hereabouts.
