I think that APS-C is here to stay, as a lower priced alternative to full frame.

I often think of APS-C as the replacement for full frame. Why do we really need big, heavy cameras when sensors improve?

Further "down" the scale are point and shoot cameras and phone cameras which have much smaller sensors. They take quite acceptable pictures but many of us feel that DSLRs, with larger APC-S sensors, are worth the extra money. Similarly others are more than willing to pay more for full frame. There are, of course, larger and more expensive formats than full frame.
