DPREVIEW: EOS M5 is a Disappointment

"This is the camera that Canon should have released two years ago"
.
The screen-cap above is from Facebook. The link below that (in blue) runs directly the the article here on DPreview. It looks to me as though even the staff here were somewhat unimpressed and underwhelmed by the new Canon EOS M5. I may not always agree with what they write but I do indeed value their opinions and observations. And yes, those comments do affect my decision when it comes to throwing down money (quite a lot of it in this instance) to buy a camera that I may or may not truly need.
.
I'm sure Canon will take this all on board. They do browse the forums here at DPreview from time to time although the threads they tend to ignore are the ones where fanboys post requests for their "dream cameras" and the ones they seem to spend most of their time digesting are (a) critical threads about their latest products and (b) product leak threads.
.
Has this negative article by DPreview staff changed your mind about forking out so much money (About US$1,000.00 for the body alone) for the M5 or will you simply buy one anyway?
.
My own opinion is that I agree entirely with DPreview in this instance. This IS indeed the camera Canon should have released 2 YEARS ago. And Canon are quite late to the party with this new offering. The video has been crippled (not that this affects me personally since I buy cameras for photography and not videography). The M5 is thus described as a "feature limited camera" and I couldn't agree more.
.

In response to the article, a respondent wrote: "Canon made big mistakes with M5 the first set the price near to Sony A6300" and this is also worth noting. More than a few Sony users have noted that they wouldn't have purchased a Sony had the Canon M5 been around at the time... and others claim they wouldn't migrate back to Canon if the M5 is all they offer in return.
.
So I think the M5 will do a good job. It will take nice pictures. There's no chance of it not being capable of doing so... But after all these years I'm somewhat baffled as to why there's no real pressure for me upgrade. Perhaps this is because the M5 isn't much of an upgrade. I'd like a new camera... I want a new camera.... I just don't feel like paying so much for so VERY little. Others here have said the same. If I did I would be wasting money and buying just to feel the minor benefits of upgrading. Cosmetically speaking, it's also particularly ugly from the front. If you don't think so, take another look. Are you telling me they chose not to add the well reviewed 'red-metallic accents' (see PowerShot G7X etc ) to the dials because they wanted to cop out on production costs... and chose not to put in LED illumination where the dials are located (See PowerShot G11) to save a few bucks... and then choose to charge more than any camera before it? The decision not to use a REMOVABLE EVF that Canon released just recently for this very type of camera? Madness. The decision not to offer their amazing Flip-LCD? It protects the screen when stowed... there goes the Journalist market. How useful it would have been to Macro shooters at a time when Canon have just released a native Macro lens for the EOS-M. The whole point of their patent for the Dual-Pixel sensor (if you read the wording of the patent carefully) was was offer Faster and More Accurate Auto-Focus to the mirrorless cameras they were developing. But that was years ago. They shoved that sensor in several DSLRs before it watered down to the EOS-M range. It took them this long to get it right and now they've arrived late again to the party (just like that video ) yet again.  In-Camera long-exposure settings BUT NO Intervalometer? Are you SERIOUS Canon? (apparently not!) -  Who on Earth makes these kinds of short-sighted decisions?
.
I suspect again that Canon really are fumbling to pass their products off on a world that is losing interest amidst all the alternatives. If your Smart Phone already takes 4K video, why would you buy a mirrorless camera that can't? Where's the inspiration to upgrade when the new Dual-Pixel sensor takes as sharp a picture as the old sensor in the original released EOS-M camera? Most people will never use all the features of their modern digital camera. But we know what we need... They keep offering us a glimpse of what they can do and then they seem to relish in denying it with future releases.
.
I just bought a new battery for my EOS-M. The original EOS-M.
Looks like a long wait for Canon to sort themselves out.  I just hope they haven't poisoned the well in the process.
