I recently tried my friend's A7II (can't remember which one - I think it was the r), and the EVF was absolutely horrid.  It was so unresponsive and laggy and so lacking in dynamic range that I would consider it unusable for all but the easiest of subjects.

If that's state-of-the-art, I would say EVFs have many year, if not decades of development left before they can replace an optical viewfinder.
