Canon has done the mount shift before, remember

I started shooting Canon in 1976, with the FD mount.  When Canon dropped the FD mount--there wasn't even a useful adapter--professionals like me were furious.  Fortunately, a lot of us were still using medium format heavily and didn't really need to make a sudden switch--we could wait to see what really shook out of this new "automatic focusing" thing.

Nikon did not change their mount, but did put their customers through a confusing maze of lenses that all fit all cameras but with varying degrees of automation.

When I finally needed to sell my FD system and go auto-focusing, I was wide open to switching to anything.  It sure didn't have to be Canon.

It was fortunate for Canon that:  A.  The all-electric EF mount was indeed a hugely superior idea that is still infinitely flexible through technological advancements and, B.  Nikon was the only other professional SLR game in town, and it's hoary old F-mount was confusing.  None of the other manufacturers were "all in" to supporting professionals as were Canon and Nikon.

Today, there still isn't anything wrong with the EF mount.  A camera body that merely lacks a mirror does not demand anything the EF mount can't deliver.  A mirrorless body only needs to be deep enough--it can still be lighter...or not.  The Rebel series is pretty much as small as most professionals want their cameras.
