G7 vs GX8 and GX85 considering possible G7 "focus pumping".
Sep 15, 2016
As mentioned in my "bubblegum artefact " thread, my trusty G3 has had its wings clipped and is not as trustworthy anymore. I am now looking for a replacement in the lines of GX-85, GX-8 (with recently much revised pricing) and G7. Now my short encounter with these model came to these - very preliminary - conclusions:
- I found the GX85 TINY to the extent it looks more like a toy than a camera; the 4-point menu buttons layout is real small and I have small hands !
- I also found the GX85 EVF a bit small and although at a higher res than my old G3, less comfortable to use (especially for a left-eye focuser) as any slight movement of the eye position would lead to double images (refraction) of the menus in the EVF; the G3 is much more forgiving. Anybody found the same issue?
- I have grown used to fully-articulated screens on my two previous cams and I must admit I like the fact you can "close it" so that it's metal facing the elements and not always a glass touch-screen.
- I even found the GX8 to FEEL lighter than the more compact GX85, even with the same lens on. Consider that I come from the old 35mm all-metal camera era so size and weight are still kind of relative to me...
- As for the G7 sample I tried, I loved the ergonomics but found that with 2 different lenses (12-32 and 42.5), it was "focus-hunting" like crazy. Not by a huge amount, just a rapid "pumping effect" that the two other cameras never produced in the same conditions (neon and halogen lighting - typical camera store). Now, is this a model issue or just a bad sample (hopefully)?
So, again, any thoughts / recommendations? Allowing for the fact that the GX8 and GX85 are now almost the same price (Canada) with the G7's considerably less (albeit with a lens I don't need but could sell at a deep discount), I am a bit concerned about the G7's focusing. Decisions, decisions....
PS: Don't, don't, don't EVER take pictures with a laser show on!
PPS: Just don't...
