Help! 16-55 has issues, possible decentering? (samples)

Hi all,

I think my fears are confirmed - I had an extended outing with my old X-T1 and 16-55 recently and when I got home I was a bit underwhelmed with the output of some of the images. There appears to be rather poor / smeared portions of the frame that are worst around the 20mm to 25mm range - I've had to bin a whole load of shots because they just won't do on large prints. The blurriness is worse on the X-T2 due to the higher resolution

I got the time tonight to test it against my 10-24mm and I definitely think I've got an issue.

Test setup:

- tripod mount and 2 second timer used
- manually focused on the same subject in frame
- both lenses stopped down to f/6.4 and set as close to 23mm as possible (in the middle of the problem focal length)
- no adjustments in Lightroom, straight conversion to TIFF then JPEG

Observations:

- the 10-24 is consistently sharp across the image at 23mm (please note - this lens' sharpness will naturally tail off since we're nearly at the end of it's focal range)
- the 16-55 is very sharp in the centre (sharper than the 10-24 and easily resolving more detail), and sharper in the extreme corner where we see fine details resolved more than the 10-24
- the 16-55 is a smeared mess in the midframe on the left and right

Thoughts please - time to send it in for repair??
