Thank you very much, xpatUSA, this is very instructive. These histograms quantify the extent of the damages and I now have a clearer view of what I should try to do better next time, and how.

Might be my fault. I made an estimate here based on pixel area of the Merrill compared to the SD14. The result was close to ISO 200. But, as Maceo pointed out, it matters little with the Merrills as long you pay attention the scene and adjust your exposure to match it.

It's nobody's fault but mine, obviously. I simply misunderstood and misused the notion of 'base ISO'. But what fills me with joy is that, thanks to the valuable comments provided on this forum, I now have serious hints about what I should improve in order to get better photos. And I can't wait before trying the various suggestions expressed in this post. Thank you all!
