Yes, the smooth transition of depth in a true stereoscopic pair is most apparent in close-up shots of people eg. portraits and small groups. In such images, there is no cut-out effect at all but a well modelled true 3-dimensional rendition. Looking at examples of such images will prove this.

The cut-out appearance is only apparent in more distant objects in the background further from the camera.
