Metering Issues with D500 + 18-300
2

I shoot sports, primarily bicycle races, and recently upgraded to a D500 as my main body. I am encountering two issues that did not happen with my D300s. They appear primarily at longer focal lengths, say 150mm+ :

  1. The meter exposes for the background, not the subject, –OR–
  2. Exposure is 3 - 4 stops down.

Settings

  • Aperture Priority
  • Autofocus mode: AF-C
  • AF-area mode: 25-point dynamic-area AF
  • a1 AF‑C priority selection: Release
  • ISO: 800 - 1600 set manually

Spot, Center-Weighted, or Matrix metering makes no difference. These issues seem to happen about 30% of the time. How can I solve this?
