Hi, I have an old EOS Rebel 300D that hasn't been used in years & was wondering what the largest capacity compact flash II card that can be used with the camera? I have an 1GB & 512MB cards, that both work, but wanted to try a 16gb or 32gb card.

IIRC the 300D is fully compatible with FAT16 (up to 2 GB).

It can also read/write FAT32 (up to 8 GB), but it will be slower.  I believe it has something to do with Cluster size.  Beyond 8 GB (FAT 32), I'm not sure.

You would need to format the card in the computer for anything above 2 GB.  If you format in-camera, then you might be limited to 2 GB?  Any Rebel owners chime in?

There are utilities that can format volumes larger than 2 GB (FAT 16), or 8 GB/32 GB (FAT 32).  Do a Google search.  I have one that will format FAT 32 beyond 2 TB.  Very handy for use in older devices that do not support exFAT (like some MP3 players).

FAT 32 format utility that I like.

You also might be able to speed up read/write times by playing with the Cluster size (FAT 32).  32 KB?  64 KB?

I'll need new batteries also as mine want hold a charge.

Folks have had great luck with Wasabi batteries.

Also the black plastic on the body has become sticky and black comes off on my hands. Any idea how to clean the sticky off without damaging the plastic?

Yup, try Isopropyl alcohol (but be sure not to use "rubbing alcohol").

Good luck!

ps. If there's any way you can find a newer camera (for very low $$), then you can use the great bang-for-the-buck EF-S lenses!
