New GH4 user question

Hi,

I've recently started using a GH4 after getting one through work. I then took it with me on holiday and did some bird photography with the Panasonic 100-300mm lens.

I've had a great time with the camera and got some photos I'm very happy with, but I'm confused about an effect that's turned up in a lot of the shots. the blurred background in a number of the zoomed shots have broken up in a kind of streaked pattern, which I find very distracting. I've not been able to figure out the pattern for when it turns up and when it doesn't. I'm attaching a not particularly great shot of a Downy Woodpecker just because it shows the effect well on the leaves in the background. The ISO on this one was 1600, zoom at 300mm, f5.6, shutter speed 800.  I cropped it about 2X but not done anything else to the photo.

Any thoughts on what causes this and how to avoid it? I tried searching for the problem but wasn't really sure how to describe it and couldn't find any examples of the same thing, so apologies if this has been covered before and I missed it.
