Full Spectrum SD14
2

First time post although I have avidly followed this forum after getting back into photography three years ago after my retirement and a hiatus of 40+ years.

On a rainy day last week, I decided to re-purpose my SD14 which has been gathering dust because of a severe back focus problem and a seriously dirty sensor. Got the focus reasonably close via the 1.5 hex screw at the bottom of the mirror box and most of the dirt off of the sensor. Left the dust filter off and with a 28-105 1:4-5.6 lens in place, ventured out to dive into the hitherto unexplored world of full spectrum photography. Found some information on how to take such pictures (2 full stops underexposure, incandescent white balance, no filters) but virtually nothing on post processing in SPP, etc. Took pictures at a lake on a partly cloudly day and at a golf course on a rainy day. Spent considerable time trying to get acceptable results via Kalpinka X3F to DNG to Dark Table, SPP to TIFF to Dark Table and GIMP, as well as other interrelated trials, none of which produced anything close to what I was looking for. Finally came up with a simple work flow which gave me encouraging results.

SPP 5.5, auto white balance, auto adjustment, reset color adjustment to 0, tweak exposure/highlight slider so histogram shows no overexposure warnings, and export to 16 bit TIFF. Open TIFF in GIMP, tweak via Brightness/Contrast and convert using EQ Black and White filter. Here’s four for your consideration and comments – all were taken at ISO 200 and F8. I consider the colored ones as an intermediate step. Am I on the right track and what am I missing?

Thanks,

Larry
