When travelling, I usually go out with one lens for the day. I will either use a fast prime for indoor shots at a museum, or a zoom like the 17-40 when I expect to need to go very wide, like some places in London or Rome. Wide lenses are handy in Rome.

Unfortunately, sometimes it is a help to have IS on a wide zoom for those interior shots. I wound up running ISOs higher than I wanted. While I can hold at lower shutter speeds with short focal lengths, it would be nice to be able to stop down and shoot at lower ISOs and smaller apertures. You are right, I have been putting off the purchase. Perhaps my next trip to Rome???
