Anyone use AWB at all ?

For all the advancement that photography technology has made in the last few years and how far it has come from the its first days, the one thing that they still somehow haven't figured out is Auto White Balance.

Time and again it has always betrayed me. Especially pictures taken in shade and indoors - they are the worst. Pictures come out lifeless and have little or no color expression. The only time it works is outdoors in daylight/sunlight (duh!) and indoors with very specific artificial lighting.

I may understand if that was the case with my old point & shoot but not with my T5i. I was not expecting this. Is this how it is with high-end DSLRs too ?

Am I missing something or not using it properly ? Is this how its supposed to work ? In other words, AWB is not supposed to be used at all ?

I am curious what other enthusiasts typically do ? I have a gray card (and that's how I found out what a terrible job awb does). But I am looking at more convenient options now like those gray caps.
