In my wallet, the hole a 200-400/4 makes is kind of too big, but apart from that I agree fully, that lens would be very nice on the D500.

I've looked at all options, FF and APS-C both from Nikon and Canon as well as doing birds with my E-M1 but I can't find a really tasteful combo so I'll keep comparing.

No one have mentioned the Fuji XF 100-400/4,5-5,6 R LM OIS WR on the new X-T2 body that is said to AF well. That could also be an interesting combination. There is a TC available as well.
